What’s the best engine oil for our 6.0 Ford Powerstrokes?
A rare breed from 2003 through 2007 sure, but NOT a dying breed, nope. THIS breed’s going to live forever, especially with the best 100% synthetic diesel engine oil for the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke. While we’re at it, might as well include the best 100% synthetic transmission fluid, differential fluids/gear lubes, antifreeze/coolant, grease, brake fluid, filters, fuel additives and more! That’s right. BUT, this article will focus mainly on the best 100% synthetic engine oil for our Ford 6.0 Powerstrokes. Our long-running work-horses that helped build our infrastructures, systems of commerce and businesses, our Ford 6.0 Powerstrokes are still working to this very day. Let’s help them live forever!
This blog article may be long but it’s thorough. I own and drive a 6.0 Powerstroke myself. Save or bookmark this blog article. Post it up in a 6.0 Powerstroke forum to help our brothers and sisters that drive these classic American diesels.
While you’re at it you might as well grab some more bragging rights for your social circles, so switch and upgrade the Powerstroke coolant/antifreeze to AMSOIL Low Toxicity Antifreeze and Engine Coolant, or AMSOIL Heavy Duty Antifreeze & Coolant. After your mechanic reads the label, or perhaps reviews the product overviews online at AMSOIL Heavy Duty Antifreeze & Coolant, then he might give YOU a tip when you return to pick up your 6.0 Powerstroke. Because you’ve educated them with additional knowledge about even higher quality oils, fluids, and lubricants than they probably knew about. No coolant revitalizer EVER, no solid elements coming out of dissolved-suspension to clog the ERG cooler, oil-cooler or radiator, OH HELL YEAH!! Honestly, I recommend the AMSOIL Heavy Duty Antifreeze & Coolant. Flush out the cooling system thoroughly, then use one of these, 1,000,000 mile rated, OH HELL YEAH again! As a 6.0 Powerstroke owner myself, I know about this set of problems caused by the old-school coolant/antifreeze. When you switch these fluids, make damn sure your oil-cooler, erg cooler and radiator are all clean inside and not partially clogged already. Maybe even put on a coolant by-pass filter also to keep that coolant/antifreeze clean, after you make damn sure none of them are even partially clogged! A by-pass coolant filter ain’t gonna unclog any of these if they’re partially clogged, so check your delta (difference in operating temperature between coolant and oil) and make damn sure. It should be a low to middle single digit number. If it’s higher, especially double digit, the oil cooler is partially clogged, maybe the radiator and/or erg cooler as well. If that’s the case, save up to replace them all at once, flush the cooling system at that time, use one of these fluids, and add a by-pass coolant filter-all of these at the same mechanic-visit or down-time if you’re doing it yourself. Not bragging, just sharing, I have a new oil-cooler (stock), new erg-cooler (Bulletproof Diesel of course), new radiator (stock), an AMSOIL Bypass Oil Filtration System AND a coolant by-pass filter. Keeping the radiator shroud is crowded in there for sure, I admit. But it helps funnel that precious cooling air through the radiator, so keep it, that’s my advice. My 6.0 Ford Powerstroke also has APR head studs, (installed by one of the previous owners). This cooling system stuff should be high on your to-do list as well if your engine doesn’t have them.

AMSOIL is the best engine oil for the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke. But which oil? Let’s see our choices.
AMSOIL SAE 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine Oil is the obvious choice to start with, a definite best engine oil for any Ford 6.0 Powerstroke. It’s engineered for pre-2007 diesel engines in on-road applications (Yep that includes the 7.3 Ford Powerstroke as well as the Cummins, Duramax, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Mack, Paccar, Navistar, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Isuzu engines too!) as well as all model year diesel engines in off-road applications. Yeah we’re talking big rigs and heavy equipment also.
This superior, specifically formulated 100% synthetic diesel engine oil has high 12 TBN that controls acids from combustion blow-by and EGR. Additional additives control soot thickening, oxidation and wear, extending drain capabilities and reducing downtime and motor oil expenses. Try finding a comparable specialized, diesel engine oil off-the-shelf in a local big-box or chain store-AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN!
Save money, time and hassle with longer oil-change intervals PLUS give your Ford 6.0 Powerstroke engine the best protection available. Do it next oil change.
Prepare yourself to be impressed.

The next choices are excellent, the best engine oils available for the 6.0 Ford Powerstroke. Can’t go wrong with any choice here on this page. AMSOIL also makes a special bypass oil filter for the 6.0 Ford Powerstroke, been making ’em for years actually! AMSOIL is BFF with the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke engine, been best friends for some time. The AMSOIL Bypass Oil Filter for the 6.0 Powerstroke mechanically removes most of the soot from the engine oil, filtering down to a much finer size than the regular oil filter. The regular oil filter catches particles down to 20 microns in size (the diameter of a human hair), the AMSOIL Bypass Oil Filter catches particles down to 2 microns in size. You keep the regular oil filter, you run both filters at the same time. Much better working conditions for the whole engine, especially including the injectors and the IPR valve, I totally recommend this. THE INJECTORS REALLY LOVE THE AMSOIL BYPASS OIL FILTRATION SYSTEM.
Ford Powerstroke specialist Bill Hewitt, owner and founder of PowerstrokeHelp.com also strongly recommends the AMSOIL Bypass Oil Filtration System. He is a long term veteran mechanic and very well known, famous specialist with Ford Powerstroke engines and trucks. Here he is back in 2008 showing how to do it. Making the best engine oil for the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke even better!

Had to throw that in about the bypass oil filter, important info. The next choice is AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil 15W40. This is the best of the best! Truly the best engine oil for the 6.0 Ford Powerstroke Diesel Engine (especially after installation of the AMSOIL Bypass Oil Filter), or ANY diesel engine. Yeah AMSOIL makes bypass oil filters for all the other diesels too. I’ll be switching to the Signature Series Max-Duty next oil change after I install my bypass oil filter on MY 6.0 Ford Powerstroke.
AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil is 100% synthetic. This is the best diesel oil after you’ve got the AMSOIL Bypass Oil Filter installed on the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke. How about up to 25,000 miles or 1 year between oil changes? Change the regular oil filter once or twice during the term at 12,500 miles OR 8,333 miles and 16,666 miles. Just BEWARE that if you’re over-tuned or have an existing engine problem that needs a fix-this ain’t snake oil. We’re talkin’ normal, correctly functioning (not abnormal like grinding cam lobes and lifters, or an early 6.0 with a high pressure oil pump singing it’s farewell song), engine operating conditions. But if you ARE over-tuned for performance, then you REALLY NEED more engine protection from the best engine oil for the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke, right? Would it be nice to save the money, time and hassle with longer oil change intervals like that? How can this be, on a Ford 6.0 Powerstroke? Official, documented oil testing during the term of that oil is the only way to be sure. Time to STEP UP to AMSOIL! Just get the pre-paid engine oil analysis kit and the engine oil analysis pump. It’s awesome.
After you get your pump and pre-paid kit, put the hose down the dip-stick tube with the pump and sample bottle attached. Pump out enough oil to fill up the sample tube. Unscrew the sample tube from the pump and screw on the lid. Follow the instructions to fill out the oil analysis forms, labels, and send it off and wait for it to return with your official documented results. Clean the pump and hose with brake cleaner or follow the directions for cleaning.

What is my personal recommendation to you, a fellow 6.0 Powerstroke owner, for the best engine oil for your Ford 6.0 Powerstroke? Glad you asked! Either Signature Series Max Duty, or Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine; an AMSOIL Bypass Oil Filter; and engine oil analysis if you really want to stretch out those drain intervals while knowing it’s okay and just how far you can stretch them. Don’t forget your buddies that you wait for at every red light for them to catch up. You know, your friends that drive a Chevy, GMC or Dodge Ram Diesel. After you’re all installed with the best engine oil for the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke that I’ve painstakingly detailed here on this page {and on the main website (BestEngineOils.com)}, and the bypass oil filter, then, after you’re all installed, pop your hood and school them at the next picnic or Prius-Hunt! Just kidding, I would never, ever promote or condone hunting down a Prius. Let them live in their cloud of imagined self-righteousness. I just wish they’d pull over and let traffic flow like it’s supposed to. Is it me, or don’t too many of them go too damn slow, below the speed limit? I think I need to get a train horn. And if your wife or girlfriend drives a Prius (or even if you’ve got one), we’ve got the best engine oil for those too.
