What is the best engine oil for Japanese cars?

The best engine oil for Japanese cars is not quite as ridiculous as it may sound.  Is such an engine oil classification even possible?  Would it be considered a racist question in today’s crazy world?  Would a yes answer to the question be considered racist?  Are Japanese cars THAT different?

Let’s dive into this vague, obscure and yet still posed question shall we?  Is there a “best engine oil for Japanese cars”?  The short answer is yes and no.

Are Japanese cars that different?  Since we’re dealing with the question of what’s the best engine oil for Japanese cars, a more precise question would be what’s the best engine oil for Japanese car engines, right?  Oright, so then we first have to determine if Japanese cars are that different.  And the answer to that question has several answers.

Best Engine Oil for Japanese Cars 1 of 4

Of course there’s a best engine oil for Japanese cars since Japanese cars are so much better and more reliable many people would say.  I remember a few decades ago when many people would say no way is there a best engine oil for Japanese cars since they’re so much worse, cheap and unreliable.  Details are EVERYTHING, as usual.  Nowadays the big automakers have factories in other countries so it becomes difficult to define.  Are they that much different?  Generally speaking, after WWII and the Japanese surrender, Japan very gradually became an incredible economic powerhouse machine, seemingly hell-bent on being the best country of manufacturing and innovation.  Their automobile and motorcycle industries sure did grow to dominate their competitors.  They finally set a standard of precision and quality manufacturing that rivaled if not surpassed their fancy and expensive competition in both the U.S. and Europe.  And that was good for everybody, especially us customers.  With the higher standards of quality and precision manufacturing, the Japanese car engines were built to produce more horsepower from smaller size engines, which put more harsh demands on engine oil.  So is there a best engine oil for Japanese cars?  Yes there is, it’s engine oil that is designed, engineered and manufactured to withstand those more extreme conditions.

So the best engine oil for Japanese cars, classification of engine oil became a necessity.  But that didn’t last for very long.  U.S. and European auto manufacturers finally sobered up and realized they’d better get busy if they want to catch up and not lose too much more market-share.  And they did finally get busy and they’re still slowly catching up.  Suppose they haven’t sobered completely up, but that’s not too important to examine right here.  What IS important to notice is that U.S. and European auto manufacturers in fact followed suit with their own higher standards of quality and precision engine manufacturing.  And they followed suit by squeezing more horsepower and performance for smaller size engines, which again was followed by placing higher demands on engine oil with more harsh and extreme conditions for the engine oil to withstand.

The manufacturers of the auto industry seemed to be studying each other’s cars more and more often, as universal benchmarks and standards seemed to be roughly set, perhaps evenly secretly agreed to.  Body styles, engine sizes and performance levels, drive train and other key component characteristics seemed to have all very gradually “melted” together.  Many products including engine oil, transmission fluids, coolants, brake fluids, tires, etc., in many cases could be used on Japanese cars, American cars, European cars, and Korean cars, etc.  So what’s the best engine oil for Japanese cars?  It’s AMSOIL of course!
